Aokiji (whose real name is Kuzan, “Blue Pheasant” in Japanese) stands out from his first appearance in chapter 303 because of an attitude surprising for a Marine admiral: he is lying on a rock, taking a nap. This surface-level nonchalance, however, conceals a man with deep convictions and complex loyalties. Oda drew inspiration from Japanese actor Yusaku Matsuda for his design—a tall, slender man with a relaxed appearance, but whose eyes betray a sharp intellect. His hooded coat, draped over his shoulders rather than worn with his arms in the sleeves, perfectly symbolizes his relationship with the institution he represents: he wears its insignia, but does not truly embrace it.
The First Encounter with the Crew
During the Long Ring Long Land arc (chapters 320–321), Aokiji briefly confronts the Straw Hat crew and easily overwhelms them—but chooses to let them go, recognizing Robin as a standard-bearer for the world's future. While Akainu believes in an absolute justice that tolerates no compromise, Aokiji practices “Lazy Justice”—his ironic term for describing a pragmatic approach that judges each case individually. After the Marineford War and Sengoku's resignation, the succession to the Fleet Admiral position is decided by a vote, then—because of a tie—by a one-on-one duel. Akainu and Aokiji fight for ten full days on Punk Hazard. The battle is so intense that it permanently divides the island into two zones: one half scorched by lava, the other frozen by ice. It is one of the most epic battles ever mentioned in One Piece—although we do not see it directly, its physical traces are still visible when the crew arrives at Punk Hazard in the arc of the same name (chapter 655).
