1. How to play the One Piece TCG?
The goal is simple: reduce your opponent's Life points to zero. Each player has a 50-card deck, a Leader, and a "DON!!" deck (resources). The game draws on the mechanics of major TCGs like Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh, but with its own originality rooted in the world of Monkey D. Luffy: Life points are not abstract numbers; they are real cards in your deck. Each hit you take may—or may not—give you a valuable card.

⚡ The DON!! System
This is the game's energy. You gain 2 DON!! cards per turn.
- Usage: Pay the cost of cards to play them.
- Boost: Attach a DON!! to a Character to increase its power (+1000 per card).
⚔️ Combat
To win, attack your opponent's Leader. Your opponent can defend with Blockers or Counter cards. If the Leader takes a hit, they take a card from their Life points—which can turn the game around.
- Refresh Phase: Set all your rested cards upright and add 1 DON!! to your area.
- Draw Phase: Draw a card from your deck.
- DON!! Phase: Add 2 new DON!! cards from your DON!! deck.
- Main Phase: Play Characters, Events, or Stages. Boost your Characters with DON!!.
- End Phase: Pass the turn to your opponent.

2. Rarity Guide: Identifying an Expensive Card
This is where things get tricky for collectors. How can you tell whether you pulled a €5 card or a €1,000 card? Look at the bottom right of the card. The rarity symbol determines not only its market value, but also its potential impact in competitive play.

- Paper texture: Official cards have a slightly rough texture. Fakes are often too smooth or too glossy.
- UV light: Under black light, official cards display patterns invisible to the naked eye.
- The bend test (with caution): Official Bandai paper withstands slight bending without developing a white mark. Counterfeits turn white immediately.

4. How to Build a Competitive Deck?
A good One Piece TCG deck is not just about “putting in your favorite cards.” It relies on color consistency, a balanced cost curve, and synergy between the Leader and the characters. Here are the essential basics for moving from casual to competitive play.
🎨 The 6 Colors and Their Archetypes
Each color corresponds to a playstyle and thematic characters from the One Piece universe. Choosing your color means choosing your identity as a player.
Aggressive attacks, Rush, high-ATK characters. Leaders: Luffy, Eustass Kid. Ideal for: offensive players who want to finish quickly.
Control, returning cards to hand, defense. Leaders: Nami, Sabo. Ideal for: patient players who enjoy countering and controlling the game.
Ramp, DON!! acceleration, high-cost cards played quickly. Leaders: Law, Marco. Ideal for: players who want to pull off combos.
Returning cards to the opponent’s hand, disruption, board control. Leaders: Doflamingo, Kaido. Ideal for: tactical players.

📐 The 4-Copy Rule
In One Piece TCG, you can include up to 4 copies of the same card in your deck (excluding the Leader). The golden rule for building a solid deck:
- 4 copies: Your essential combo or core strategy cards.
- 2-3 copies: Support cards or situational alternatives.
- 1 copy: "Tech" cards for handling specific meta situations.
- 1x Leader (outside the deck)
- 12-16x Characters costing 1-3 (the foundation, so you never run out)
- 12-16x Characters costing 4-6 (the main threats)
- 4-8x Events / Counters (for defense and countering)
- 4-8x Characters costing 7+ (the finishers)
- 0-4x Stages (depending on the strategy)

6. Tournaments and Competition: From Local to World Championship
The One Piece TCG has an official competitive scene organized by Bandai. It is structured in ascending levels — from local store tournaments to the annual World Championship. Here is how the circuit works and how you can participate.

- Store Tournaments (Boutique Tournaments): The entry level. Held every week at Bandai partner stores. Format: Swiss (elimination rounds). Prizes: promotional packs and exclusive cards. Open to players of all levels.
- Regional Championships: Regional tournaments with 100 to 500 participants. The format is "Best of 3" single elimination after a Swiss phase. The top 8 receive exclusive Alt Art cards not available in stores.
- National Championships: One per country. Qualifies the best players for the World Championship. The deck list must be submitted before the tournament — no changes possible.
- World Championship: The annual event organized in Japan by Bandai. The best players in the world compete. The winner receives a trophy and unique non-printable Trophy cards (value: priceless to collectors).
- Standard: All legal expansions. The most-played competitive format.
- Sealed: Each player opens boosters on-site and builds a deck with the cards they obtain. A fun and fair format.
- Draft: Players exchange cards before building their decks. A highly technical format requiring in-depth knowledge of all the cards.

A Tier 1 deck generally costs between €80 and €300, depending on the rare cards involved. If you are just starting out, begin with a €15–20 Starter Deck, learn the mechanics, then complete it with targeted single cards.
Absolutely. The TCG is a standalone game that can be understood without knowing the story. However, knowing the characters and their roles in the manga will help you understand the synergies between cards and choose the deck that suits you. A Starter Deck is a complete, ready-to-play 50-card deck with a fixed card list. A Booster is a pack of 12 random cards. Starters are designed for learning and playing right away. Boosters are designed for collecting, strengthening an existing deck, or trying to obtain rare cards.
Three essential rules: 1/ Put every card in a sleeve as soon as you get it. 2/ Store valuable cards in rigid top loaders (cardboard protection). 3/ Keep them at a constant room temperature, away from direct light and moisture. For cards worth more than €100, PSA or Beckett grading is recommended to verify authenticity and maximize their value.
