The 6 levels of Impel Down: from purgatory to Eternal Hell
Impel Down is an immersed vertical structure whose levels descend deeper and deeper beneath the ocean. The farther down you go, the more inhumane the detention conditions become — a system designed to make the very idea of escape seem absurd.
Level 1 – Crimson Hell: a forest of razor-sharp blades. Prisoners are slashed with every step. Level 2 – Wild Beast Hell: monstrous hybrid creatures (manticores, sphinxes, basilisks) attack constantly. Level 3 – Starvation Hell: oppressive heat and a total lack of food. Level 4 – Blazing Hell: a lake of molten lava where Magellan himself resides.
Level 5 – Freezing Hell: deadly freezing cold — Jinbe was imprisoned there. Even Devil Fruit users find their abilities weakened there. Between Levels 5 and 6 lies Newkama Land (5.5), Ivankov’s secret refuge. Finally, Level 6 – Eternal Hell: the officially nonexistent level, where Ace and Jinbe were imprisoned, and from which Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, mysteriously escaped.

Magellan: the untouchable warden of Impel Down
Magellan and his Poison Hydra — the Impel Down warden’s most devastating technique.
It is difficult to talk about Impel Down without focusing on its warden: Magellan. A user of the Doku Doku no Mi — the Poison Fruit — he generates and manipulates every type of venom, from the most corrosive to the most paralyzing. His entire body can transform into poison armor, making him virtually untouchable in close combat.
Luffy could only face him at the cost of extreme suffering. Magellan’s poison nearly killed the future Pirate King, and only Ivankov’s intervention allowed Luffy to survive — at the cost of aging his body by ten years. An invisible scar that stays with Luffy until his Gear 5 awakening.
Magellan is methodical. His mere presence is enough to maintain order. Even the Seven Warlords of the Sea feared ending up in Impel Down. Luffy’s escape: the craziest feat in One Piece
The Impel Down arc is often cited as one of the best in the series. Oda accomplishes something incredible here: taking his hero, plunging him into the most secure prison in the world, and having him emerge with an army — in an absolute emergency, with Ace due to be executed at Marineford in less than 24 hours.
Luffy infiltrates the prison alone, without a plan, driven only by his will. What follows is a chain of encounters and sacrifices. Bon Clay — Mr. 2 is undoubtedly the most moving character in this arc. His friendship with Luffy, his final bravery in keeping the gates of Impel Down open… few scenes in One Piece are as poignant. Crocodile, Jinbe, and Buggy the Clown also return, organically reintroduced here with their own motivations.
The Marines and the World Government were ridiculed, their fortress turned into a sieve. The legacy of this arc can still be felt today: Ace’s legacy carried by Sabo and the revelations about Imu-sama have their roots in what the Government sought to hide at Impel Down.
