He cannot die. He has been captured seven times by the Marines and four times by the Emperors—and each time, he escaped or broke his chains. He survived every trap and every attempted execution. Kaido of the Beast, Yonko and king of Wano, is officially designated as the world’s most powerful living being in the One Piece universe.
Yet this invincible man is bored. For decades, he has sought a glorious death on the battlefield—and it is this contradiction between forced immortality and his desire for death that makes him one of the most fascinating antagonists in the entire series. Here is his complete story.

👹 Kaido of the Beast—Complete Profile
⚓ Origins: The Rocks Pirates and the Rise to Power
The Rocks Pirates—the strongest crew in history
Before becoming an independent Yonko, Kaido sailed under the banner of Rocks D. Xebec, captain of the Rocks Pirates—the most feared crew of its era, which also included Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Charlotte Linlin. This was forty years ago, before the famous Battle of God Valley, where Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp joined forces to defeat them.
This defeat scattered the crew—but each of its members became a legend. Kaido in particular emerged as one of the most brutal fighters of his generation, racking up spectacular captures and escapes until he established himself on Wano Kuni, an isolated nation that he transformed into his personal fortress.
Wano and the Conquest of a Sovereign Country
Kaido settled in Wano with his Beasts Pirates crew and allied himself with the corrupt Shogun Orochi. Together, they transformed the country into a weapons and ammunition production factory, forcing the population to work in slave-like conditions. The forests were cleared, the rivers polluted, and the inhabitants starved—all to fuel Kaido’s war machine.
Kaido was one of the four Yonko who divided the New World into areas of influence. To understand the hierarchy of the Emperors and their role in maintaining the balance of power, see our complete guide to the 4 Emperors.
🐉 Uo Uo no Mi Fruit: The Mythical Azure Dragon
The Most Powerful Zoan Fruit in History
The Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Azure Dragon is a Mythical Zoan Fruit—the rarest and most powerful category of Zoan Fruits. It allows Kaido to transform into a colossal eastern dragon or adopt a hybrid form combining the dragon's attributes with those of his already gigantic human form.
In dragon form, Kaido measures hundreds of meters in length. He can fly, spew explosions of flame and lightning (Bolo Breath), generate clouds, and control atmospheric elements on a superhuman scale. The entire island of Onigashima was literally lifted and moved using his flying abilities alone.
| Technique | Form | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Bolo Breath | Dragon / Hybrid | Mass-destructive fire breath |
| Tatsumaki Kaifu | Dragon | Draconic tornado that skims everything in its path |
| Raimei Hakke | Hybrid | Lightning strike via the kanabō |
| Hakai | Human / Hybrid | Combined technique with Big Mom — devastating |
| Kaifu | Hybrid | Blade wind generated by the kanabō |
| Shoryu Kaen | Hybrid | Ascending Flame Dragon |
Invincibility: myth or reality?
Kaido is not literally invincible—but his durability surpasses anything One Piece had shown up to that point. He has endured attacks from Luffy in Gear 4, Zoro wielding Enma infused with Haki, Law, Kid, Big Mom, and the entire Onigashima coalition—and continued fighting. His draconic regeneration combined with his advanced Conqueror's Haki (infused into his skin) makes his defenses nearly impenetrable to an opponent without Haki of an equivalent level.
🏯 Wano Kuni: The Kingdom Under Terror
Onigashima — the fortress of chaos
Kaido establishes his main base on Onigashima, an island off the coast of Wano transformed into a monstrous fortress. This is where he gathers his Tobi Roppo, his All-Stars (his most powerful officers, such as King, Queen, and Jack), and his army of several thousand soldiers equipped with SMILE Fruits.
The structure of his Beasts Pirates crew is directly modeled on a military hierarchy — each rank corresponds to a precise level of power, with a superhuman second-in-command at every tier. It is the most structured private army in all of One Piece, designed for total war.
The "New Oni Era" Project and the World of War
Kaido's ultimate goal is not merely the domination of Wano: he wants to trigger a global war by using Wano as a launching point — a war that, according to him, is the only way to "change the world." It is a nihilistic vision of freedom: destroying the existing order by fire to forge a new one. He also hoped to get his hands on the Pluton Blueprint hidden in Wano to make this ambition a reality.
☣️ The SMILE Army and the Link to Doflamingo
Soldiers Transformed by Force
Kaido financed and used the production of SMILE Fruits — artificial imitation Zoan Fruits made by Caesar Clown using SAD supplied by Doflamingo. These fruits only work for 10% of their consumers — the remaining 90% are condemned to a shattered existence: unable to express any emotions other than laughter, even in the face of pain or sadness.
Kaido distributed these SMILE fruits to the people of Wano against their will, creating an army of half-Zoan warriors — and a psychologically devastated civilian population. It is one of the most systemic acts of cruelty ever depicted in One Piece.
Doflamingo's defeat in Dressrosa deprived Kaido of his SAD supply, directly triggering his fury and his plans to accelerate his operations in Wano. The two arcs are narratively inseparable.
💪 His True Power
Advanced Conqueror's Haki — the secret weapon
The fundamental reason for Kaido's invincibility lies in his mastery of Advanced Conqueror's Haki — the rarest form of Haki, which allows the conqueror's will to be infused directly into the body and weapons. Kaido uses this technique to coat his entire body, making his skin literally impervious to ordinary attacks. It was during the fight against Luffy at Onigashima that this technique was first explained in the series.
| Ability | Level | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Uo Uo no Mi (Dragon) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Mythical Zoan—the rarest |
| Advanced Conqueror's Haki | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Entire body coated, lightning of will |
| Advanced Armament Haki | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Infused into kanabō and claws |
| Physical durability | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | The highest in the series |
| Raw power | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | One kanabō strike KO'd Gear 4 Luffy |
Drunk or sober—the difference in fighting style
One of Kaido's most original traits is that he fights differently depending on his level of drunkenness. Sober, he is methodical, brutal, and defensive. Drunk, he becomes unpredictable—sometimes festive and playful, sometimes exponentially more violent and erratic. Each mode has its own kanabō techniques, creating a multifaceted fighter whom no opponent can completely anticipate.
💥 Defeat at the Hands of Luffy Gear 5
The only fight capable of defeating him
Kaido and Luffy faced each other three times during the Wano arc. The first two times, Kaido defeated Luffy without too much effort. The third confrontation—at the top of Onigashima—was different: after Luffy "died" from one of Kaido's blows and his Fruit awakened in Gear 5 — the form of the Sun God Nika, the battle completely turned around.
The absolute freedom of Gear 5—turning reality into a cartoon, laughing off every blow, stretching the world like rubber—made Kaido unable to read or anticipate the attacks. The final blow, Gomu Gomu no Bajrang Gun, tore through the entire island of Onigashima and pulverized Kaido through the rock all the way to the center of the Earth—bringing his reign over Wano to an end.
A still-mysterious fate
Unlike other defeated and imprisoned antagonists, Kaido's fate after Wano has not been explicitly confirmed. He fell into a magma lake—but for someone who survived dozens of executions, nothing guarantees a definitive death. Oda deliberately left this ambiguity open for the final saga.
