Why did the war break out?
It all began with the arrest of Portgas D. Ace by the World Government. Ace, commander of the 2nd Division of the Whitebeard Pirates and the biological son of Gol D. Roger, was an ideal target: his public execution would send a message to all the world's pirates. The Marine Headquarters chose Marineford as the execution site.
Whitebeard then mobilized his entire crew and allies. To him, attacking his adopted son Ace was a direct declaration of war. The Marines mobilized their three Admirals—Aokiji, Akainu, and Kizaru—as well as nearly all of the 7 Great Warlords of the Sea. And in the middle of it all, Luffy—who had just escaped from Impel Down—arrived with an army of fugitives.

Ace's death and the end of an era
Whitebeard at Marineford—the world's strongest man, who came alone to challenge the full power of the World Government.
Ace is freed—briefly. But Admiral Akainu provokes Ace by insulting Roger's memory. Unable to let his biological father be slandered, Ace turns back to retaliate. Akainu pierces him with his magma fist. Luffy did not have time to stop him. It is the most painful scene in the entire saga—Luffy holding his dying brother in his arms, helpless for the first time in his life.
Whitebeard dies soon afterward, standing upright, riddled with 267 wounds, without a single one in his back. His final cry confirms the existence of the One Piece and triggers the era Roger had announced. It is Shanks who ends the fighting with a single look, preventing a total massacre.
