How Awakening was introduced in the series
The term “Awakening” (Kakusei in Japanese) first appeared in the Impel Down arc, when the prison's Jailer Beasts were introduced as awakened Zoans. It was not until Dressrosa, during the battle between Luffy and Doflamingo, that the concept took on its full significance. Doflamingo then explained that some Devil Fruit users had reached a stage where their powers influenced not only their bodies, but also everything around them.
The differences between Paramecia Awakening and Zoan Awakening

Doflamingo and the Awakening of the Ito Ito no Mi (threads)
Donquixote Doflamingo, former Shichibukai and fallen Tenryuubito, is the first character to have explicitly named and used the Awakening of his Fruit in combat. His Ito Ito no Mi (Awakened) allows him to transform Dressrosa's buildings, streets, and all structures into threads of destruction — creating the “Birdcage” that imprisons the entire island. Law and the Awakening of the Ope Ope no Mi (operation)
Trafalgar D. Water Law, captain of the Heart Pirates and Luffy's ally against Kaido, possesses the Ope Ope no Mi, nicknamed the “Ultimate Devil Fruit.” In its ordinary form, it creates a spatial sphere (the “Room”) in which he can move, cut, and reassemble anything he wants without causing vital damage. In its Awakened form — confirmed during the fight against Eustass Kid and Trafalgar against Big Mom — Law can create “Rooms” of far greater size and range, and use techniques such as “K-Room” and “Puncture Wille,” capable of piercing an opponent's body from the inside at a distance.

Eustass Kid, Luffy's rival and captain of the Kid Pirates, also confirmed the Awakening of his Fruit during the battle against Big Mom. Their Awakening grants them extraordinary vitality and regeneration: even after being svagely defeated by Luffy, they get back up several times. Rob Lucci at Egghead
Rob Lucci, a CP0 agent and former antagonist from the Enies Lobby arc, reappears in the Egghead arc with an awakened Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard. His Awakening allows him to envelop his body in a larger, more powerful hybrid form, combining the fluidity and speed of his Zoan with greatly increased raw power. 💡 Does Zoan Awakening alter the mind?
One troubling detail: the Jailer Beasts of Impel Down seem to have lost part of their consciousness to their awakened animal forms. This is not the case with the Zoan Awakenings of the main characters (Lucci, Luffy), who retain total control. This suggests that Zoan Awakening at this level requires considerable mental mastery—or that the conditions for achieving Awakening influence the user's mental state.

The manga does not provide a detailed protocol for achieving Awakening, but several elements can be deduced from the confirmed cases and the explanations provided by the characters.
Complete mastery of the Fruit as a prerequisite
All confirmed Awakened users were already absolute masters of their Devil Fruits in their ordinary forms. Doflamingo had used the Ito Ito no Mi for decades. Law had developed the Ope Ope no Mi to a level where his Rooms covered entire areas. Katakuri had such precise control over mochi that he could predict collisions with his Observation Haki. Awakening seems to require not only time, but also a deep and intuitive understanding of the Fruit's fundamental principle.
Willpower as a catalyst
In Luffy's case, Awakening was triggered in a near-death situation—after Kaido stopped his heart. The will to survive, combined with the special nature of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, catalyzed the Awakening. For Law and Kid, Awakening appeared in the context of a fight against a force that surpassed them (Big Mom). Extreme pressure therefore seems to be a frequent trigger.
