Yamato is a complex character. Assigned female at birth, they identify as a man out of admiration for the legendary samurai Oden. They read Oden's logbook and know the secrets of Laugh Tale, but chose not to reveal anything to Luffy in order to preserve the adventure.

The Makami Fruit: Guardian of Wano
Yamato ate the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami. It is a Mythical Zoan representing a wolf deity that protects Japan. This fruit allows them to breathe ice (Namuji Hyoga) and rival Kaido's fiery breath.
In addition to their Devil Fruit, Yamato has mastered advanced Conqueror's Haki, a feat that very few characters (such as Luffy, Shanks, and Zoro) can accomplish. They managed to hold Kaido off one-on-one until Luffy returned, proving their "Admiral"-level strength.
The Connection with Ace
Long before meeting Luffy, Yamato became friends with Portgas D. Ace during his visit to Wano. They drank sake together and talked about the new generation of pirates.

Why Didn't Yamato Join the Crew (Right Away)?
At the end of the Wano Arc, everyone thought Yamato would board the Sunny as the 11th member. Surprise: they decided to stay.
There are two reasons:
- They want to explore Wano thoroughly, just as Oden did before leaving.
- They must protect the country from outside threats (such as Admiral Ryokugyu), because the borders are open and Pluton is vulnerable (see: Franky and Pluton).
Luffy told them: "As soon as you want to become a pirate, we'll come and get you." Yamato is therefore an honorary member, ready to join the Final War.
Conclusion: Freedom Above All
Yamato lived chained up for 20 years. Today, they run free across the plains of Wano. Their story isn't over; it's only just beginning.
