Devil Fruits and Haki: The Complete Guide to One Piece Powers
The complete guide to One Piece powers. Technical analysis of Logia, Zoan, and Paramecia, Awakening, and the three types of Haki.
To survive on the Grand Line, there are only two paths to power: eat a Devil Fruit (Akuma no Mi) and accept the curse of the seas, or forge your spirit to master Haki (Fluid).
Kaido said it: "Devil Fruit abilities aren't enough to conquer the world. Only Haki transcends everything." Yet, history proves that combining the two creates nearly invincible beings. Luffy in Gear 5 is the ultimate example: a Mythical Fruit wielded by absolute Conqueror's Haki.
This guide breaks down every power system — mechanisms, limitations, advanced stages, and canonical examples — so that you can understand precisely why certain fighters are so formidable.
1. Devil Fruits: The Curse of Power
These are mystical fruits with varied appearances that grant supernatural powers in exchange for an irreversible curse: the inability to swim. The user sinks like an anvil as soon as they touch seawater — and their powers are neutralized by prolonged contact. Dr. Vegapunk theorized that they are the manifestation of humanity's desire to evolve beyond its biological limits.

The 3 Major Families:
The most common type (~70% of fruits). It modifies the user's body, allows them to produce a substance, or affects the environment. The variety is infinite — no two Paramecia are alike.
Notable examples:
- Law: Ope Ope no Mi (Operation) — dimensional surgery. Why is it worth 5 billion?
- Brook: Yomi Yomi no Mi (Revival) — only one death permitted. Can he die again?.
- Doflamingo: Ito Ito no Mi (Strings) — puppet control.
- Katakuri: Mochi Mochi no Mi (Mochi) — special Paramecia capable of imitating Logias.
- Bonney: Toshi Toshi no Mi (Ages) — manipulation of age and “futures.” Analysis of Bonney’s Devil Fruit.
Specific weakness: Seawater + Seastone (Kairouseki). For Paramecias that transform the body, contact with water deactivates their powers.
Allows the user to transform into an animal (or hybrid). Physically boosts the user even without transforming. Exists in 4 subcategories of increasing rarity.
Notable examples:
- Chopper: Hito Hito no Mi (Human) — 7 forms with Rumble Ball. Everything about Rumble Balls.
- Luffy (true power): Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika — Mythical Zoan. Gear 5 analysis.
- Kaido: Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu (Azure Dragon) — Mythical Zoan.
- Rob Lucci: Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard — Ancient Zoan.
- X Drake: Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus — Ancient Zoan.
Unique strength: Awakened Zoans gain extraordinary recuperative power and near-inhuman resistance to damage. The Pacifistas are proof of this.
The rarest and most feared type. The user becomes a natural element—they do not transform; they are the element. Most attacks pass through their body without effect. Only Armament Haki bypasses this intangibility.
Notable examples:
- Sabo / Ace: Mera Mera no Mi (Fire). Ace’s legacy of fire.
- Enel: Goro Goro no Mi (Lightning)—200M volts. Enel on the Moon?
- Aokiji: Hie Hie no Mi (Ice)—can freeze the ocean.
- Akainu: Magu Magu no Mi (Magma)—hotter than fire, overturning the elemental hierarchy.
- Blackbeard: Yami Yami no Mi (Darkness)—absorbs and neutralizes other fruits.
Unique counter: Armament Haki (strikes the user as if they were solid). Seastone. And certain natural elements (Magma > Fire, confirmed in Akainu vs Ace).
2. Rare Zoans: Ancient & Mythical
Not all Zoans are equal. There are three subcategories that far surpass ordinary Zoans in raw power and special abilities.
🦕 Ancient Zoans (Dinosaurs)
Fruits that allow users to transform into prehistoric creatures—dinosaurs and other extinct animals. Considered extraordinarily powerful thanks to their greater mass and durability compared with modern animals.
- Queen (Tobi Roppo): Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus
- X Drake: Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus
- Ulti: Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pachycephalosaurus
- Page One: Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Spinosaurus
🐉 Mythical Zoans
The rarest of them all. Rarer than Logias according to Oda. They allow users to transform into legendary creatures, with unique special abilities for each form—not just brute strength.
- Luffy: Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika—absolute freedom, cartoon-like body
- Kaido: Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu—Celestial Dragon, generates clouds and storms
- Marco: Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix—blue regenerative flames
- Gorosei (5 Elders): Mythical Zoans based on Japanese yokai—revealed on Egghead
🤖 Artificial Zoans (SMILE & SAD)
Created by Caesar Clown and Doflamingo using the SAD substance. Only 10% of SMILEs work perfectly. The remaining 90% force their users to laugh constantly (making them unable to express negative emotions). Used by Kaido to arm the Gifters' army in Wano.
Tragic consequence: The inhabitants of Kuri under Kaido unknowingly ate defective SMILEs—condemned to smile even in distress.
3. L'Éveil (Awakening): The Ultimate Stage
Awakening is the most advanced form of mastery of a Devil Fruit. It is extremely rare—even among high-level users, most never reach this stage. It represents such a profound mastery of the fruit that the user can surpass the limits of their own body.
⚡ Paramecia Awakening
The user can transform their environment (ground, walls, objects) into their own substance, in addition to their body. This exponentially multiplies the area of effect of their attacks.
Examples:
- Doflamingo: Ground and buildings transformed into strings—God Thread, Bird Cage.
- Katakuri: Environment transformed into Mochi—increased speed and enhanced traps.
- Luffy (Gear 5): Transforms the environment into rubber—the ground, enemies, everything can become elastic.
🌊 Logia Awakening
The user can transform their environment into their natural element with complete mastery and across a much larger area. Their control over the element becomes absolute.
Examples:
- Akainu: Transforms Marineford into a field of molten magma.
- Enel: Controls lightning over Skypiea (200M volts across the entire island).
🐾 Zoan Awakening
Unlike other types, Zoan Awakening does not transform the environment. It transforms the user themselves—granting extraordinary regeneration, near-total resistance to damage, and vastly increased brute strength.
Examples:
- Luffy (Nika): Gear 5 — transformation into the embodiment of the Sun God. A body freed from all physical rules. Everything About Gear 5.
- Fruit Guardians (Impel Down): The guardian animals (Sphinx, Minotaur, etc.) are artificially awakened Zoans, awakened involuntarily.
4. Haki (The Fluid): Forged Ambition
Haki is a latent force present in every living being, but awakening it requires exceptional willpower. It is the only universally effective weapon against Logias (apart from Seastone) and the hallmark of true high-level warriors.
👉 Complete Guide: Luffy’s 3 Forms of Haki.
👁️ Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku)
Grants a sixth sense: sense presences from a distance, assess opponents’ power, and anticipate attacks before they are launched. This is the most common form of Haki among elite fighters.
Detection of presences, emotions, and intentions. All officers and vice admirals master this level.
See the near future with precision. Only Katakuri, Shanks, Luffy, and Enel have clearly demonstrated it in the story.
A rare extension of Observation Haki — allows the user to hear the thoughts of animals and inanimate objects. Roger and Luffy are the only confirmed users.
Note: It is linked to the "Voice of All Things." Learn more about the Voice.
🛡️ Armament Haki (Busoshoku)
Creates invisible armor (or visible black armor at higher levels) that hardens the body and objects for attack and defense. It is the universal counter to Logias — sufficiently dense Haki strikes the user as if they were solid.
Black armor on the body or weapons. Increased hardening and cutting power. Effective against Logias.
Project Haki outside the body to strike the inside of an enemy without touching the exterior. Demonstrated by Rayleigh and Hyogoro in Wano.
When a swordsman imbues their sword with Haki for long enough, the blade permanently turns black and increases in rank. View blade replicas.
👑 Conqueror's Haki (Haoshoku)
The rarest form — approximately 1 person in 1 million. It is not something that can be learned: you either possess it or you do not. It is the power to impose your will on others, potentially paralyzing or rendering unconscious those with weak wills.
A discharge of willpower that neutralizes weak enemies within a short radius. Often triggered involuntarily under intense emotions.
Infuse your attacks with Haoshoku to strike without physical contact and generate black lightning. Only Roger, Whitebeard, Shanks, Kaido, and Luffy have demonstrated this.
At the highest level, the clash of two Haoshoku users splits the clouds and space itself — as seen during the Roger/Whitebeard and Shanks/Luffy clashes.
Confirmed users in the story: Roger, Whitebeard, Rayleigh, Shanks, Kaido, Big Mom, Luffy, Zoro, Yamato, Boa Hancock, Doflamingo, Katakuri.
5. The Voice of All Things
The “Voice of All Things” is a rare extension of Observation Haki that allows one to hear the voices of living creatures, inanimate objects — and the Poneglyphs themselves. It is the only way to “sense” the message of the stones without academically reading them.
- Gol D. Roger — could hear the Poneglyphs, allowing him to chart his course to Laugh Tale without officially knowing how to read them.
- Monkey D. Luffy — can hear giant creatures (Zunesha, Zou’s elephant) and sense the Poneglyphs. His connection with nature strengthens this ability in Gear 5.
- Kozuki Oden — possessed this ability partially, which complemented his mastery of the Poneglyphs alongside Roger.
This power explains why Roger and Luffy share a unique destiny: they can “read” the world’s history without needing an archaeologist. For more details, see our article on the Voice of All Things.
6. The Absolute Anomaly: Blackbeard
One man defies every rule in this guide: Marshall D. Teach. He is the only known human to possess two Devil Fruits simultaneously — the Yami Yami no Mi (Darkness, Logia) and the Gura Gura no Mi (Quakes, Paramecia).
The Yami Yami no Mi is itself an anomaly: it absorbs and neutralizes other Devil Fruits. Blackbeard can cancel any user’s powers through contact — but in return, he feels the pain of every attack without being able to deflect it (unlike other Logias).

❓ FAQ: Fruits & Powers
Normally, no—the user’s body would explode. It is a fundamental rule of the world. Blackbeard is the only known exception to date, thanks to a physical peculiarity that Oda has not yet explained canonically.
The debate is open. The Gura Gura no Mi (Tremor-Tremor Fruit) is said to be "capable of destroying the world." Law’s Ope Ope no Mi is the "Ultimate Fruit" thanks to its immortality operation. But the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika (Luffy) has the most "free" potential—and a power that grows without limit with the user’s joy and laughter.
The Toshi Toshi no Mi (Age-Age Fruit) of Jewelry Bonney allows her to access "Distorted Futures"—temporarily enabling her to manifest a form similar to Luffy’s Nika, connected to her desire to see her father Kuma free. It is not a strict copy, but a projection of future potential.
The Devil Fruit reappears in an ordinary fruit nearby—often the one closest to where the user died. That is how Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi was recovered in Dressrosa, and how Blackbeard stole the Gura Gura no Mi directly from Whitebeard’s body.
In theory, yes—that is the basic principle behind Luffy’s Gears and Zoro’s training. The more a fighter hones their will and accumulates elite battles, the denser their Haki becomes. Rayleigh explicitly says there is no ceiling to Haki mastery—only the limit of human willpower.
Seastone contains the same energy as seawater, condensed into solid stone. Vegapunk confirmed that it exactly mimics the ocean’s energy signature—neutralizing Devil Fruits through contact as if the user were submerged, without actually getting them wet. That is why Seastone handcuffs are the Marines’ standard anti-pirate tool.
